This exhibit talks about the travels of captain Drake, and his use of an early navigation instrument, the cross stick. We designed a ship using 3D studio, and then printed it in ABS plastic using our 3D printer. We built a miniature set to see how much of the set we reconstruct to ensure that no matter where visitors look through the window they will not lose the illusion of seeing a ship on the ocean. The deck was veneered with wooden "planking" to get the right kind of feel to the model.

Two 40" LCD screens complete the set. One screen is located in horizontal orientation, and a miniature ship is located on top to get some depth to the scene and another point of interest. The video on that screen is rendered as an ocean at night, with small waves, and the lights on the other ship are rendered as reflections in the water. The second screen is used to show the starry sky in the background as well as the story of the way in which Captain Drake used the cross-staff to navigate the world.
