Alutiiq Museum Interactives, Alutiiq Museum
Anchorage, Alaska

The Alutiiq museum in Anchorage aims to preserve the heritage of these native people. At the time of the opening of the museum in 2006, only 35 people remain in the world that speak the Alutiiq language, and an effort is underway to try to preserve this language.

The interactive that was developed for the museum comprises several subheadings:

Users access t he Alutiiq Language interactive from the main menu.
Once inside the Alutiiq Language interactive, the user can choose from among the following five sections: Plant Life, Social Life, Spritituality, Land and Sea, Hunting.
Inside a language section, users interact with an array of images. The Alutiiq and English words appear for the highlighted image.
Once a user selects an image, it enlarges. The user can then touch the image to hear the Alutiiq word spoken. An accompanying story enables visitors to learn of the significance of the pictured item in Alutiiq culture.
The Alutiiq language: Images were selected that show a number of different people or objects. The visitor first chooses one of the subjects, and then touches an area on the image that is on the screen to hear the word being spoken at the same time that the English and the Alutiiq written word appears on the screen. In this small way, we hope to interest the next generation in the language interactive that has been developed for the Alutiiq people's website.

Timeline: The timeline of the Alutiiq people's history shows relevant events to the history going back over  10,000 years. By scrolling around the timeline, different images and stories appear on the screen.
